14th April 2021 - Forest Bathe

Before swimming, we spend a few moments in the undergrowth next to the mixed pond. A rich and complex blend of greenery in dappled light.

I’ve read that being surrounded by green is therapeutic because it activates a state of awareness that humans are adapted to spend most of their time in. This peripheral awareness soothes our nervous system, encouraging “rest and digest” processes rather than the “fight or flight” that comes with intense focus.

Amongst the trees I try to zoom out, to see as wide as I can. Everything softens and blends. I feel relaxed.

The swim is sharp. We are fooled by the sunshine yet again, expecting warmer waters. But it is still 8 degrees.

It sets me up for the day, clearing my head of mild allergy congestion.
